A truly unique community resource, the Louisville Nature Center
offers wonderful opportunities for nature study and recreation--right in the heart of the city!
Bring a lunch and relax at our picnic tables or under the covered gazebo.
Among our unique features are: a native wildflower garden and pond, butterfly gardens, hiking trails through the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve,
a one-of-a-kind bird blind, wildlife exhibits, Beargrass Creek watershed exhibit, a meeting room, and our library--a great place to do research and spend some time indoors when the weather is too hot, too cold or rainy to study nature outside.

ADOPT-A-TREE PROGRAM
Volunteer gardener, Denise Spear, is initiating an adopt-a-tree program at LNC. She has offered to impart some of her wealth of tree knowledge to groups or individuals who will commit to adopting a tree for a period of one year. It is easy and fun. Groups can be families (Denise loves working with young children), scout groups, school groups, churches, special needs folks or any other groups or individuals interested in participating in the program.
Participants will call LNC and let us know you are interested in the program. We will set up a time for you to meet with Denise for you tree orientation program. This is when you will pick out your tree. The orientation will be geared toward your particular tree's needs and presented at the level appropriate for your group's age and diversity. The basic care will consist of invasive removal around the tree, water and drought care and mulching as needed. Denise will follow along with the tree care and provide groups with any additional guidance as needed.
The best part of all is that all adopters will have their picture displayed on LNC's bulletin board along with their very special trees. It will be a fun and educational opportunity for community members to make a difference in the community by helping to preserve some of the natural elements here in our urban greenspace.
Call 458-1328 and leave your name and number if you wish to be included in this project.
THE MASTER GARDENERS are available here every other Wednesday at 9:00 am to answer your gardening questions. Call LNC for more information.
They also plan to be on hand at various events this year to answer your questions and make suggestions on your home installation of rain gardens. (See below for information on purchasing rain barrels from LNC.)
RAIN BARRELS ARE AVAILABLE AT LOUISVILLE NATURE CENTER
Rain barrels collect, store, and divert rooftop runoff during a rain event. They are good for the environment and help save money on your water bill. Through a generous donation from MSD, the Louisville Nature Center has rain barrels available for $70 each, or $65 each for two or more. The barrels come already assembled with a spigot and overflow tube. The assembly work is done for you by Youth Build, a non-profit community youth group. Best of all, you can pick up your barrel right here at LNC. Call us at 458-1328 for more information.
One hundred percent of the rain barrel proceeds go toward helping LNC continue its mission.
